Budapest Wine Festival 2026 at Buda Castle

The Budapest Wine Festival returns to Buda Castle from 9 to 12 September 2026, celebrating its 35th anniversary with more than 1,000 wines and sparkling wines, gastronomy, tastings and four evenings of music overlooking the Danube.

Hungarian wine remains at the heart of the festival, but the anniversary edition also brings a strong international dimension. The Americas take the spotlight as this year’s guest of honour, while a mix of guided tastings, conversations with winemakers and interactive experiences gives visitors different ways to explore what is being poured across Buda Castle.

The 2026 edition also changes the rhythm of the festival itself. For the first time, it will run from Wednesday to Saturday instead of Thursday to Sunday, while the new half-price Explorer ticket offers an earlier and quieter way to experience the festival before the evening crowds arrive.

35 Wines for the Festival’s 35th Anniversary

Choosing where to begin among such a large wine selection is a challenge in itself. For the anniversary edition, however, the organisers have created one possible starting point: Top 35 Outstanding Wines, a selection of internationally recognised bottles available from this year’s exhibitors.

To qualify, each wine must have received at least a gold medal at a major international competition. The resulting selection spans different producers and styles, with participating stands marked on the festival map so visitors can seek out the wines as they explore.

Among the 35 are Teleki Tradíció Malbec 2023, which collected gold and grand gold awards across several international competitions; Bock Magnifico 2020 from Villány; Bodri Winery’s Terroir Selection Tokaji Aszú 5 puttonyos 2019; and Tamás Günzer Winery’s Bocor Villányi Franc 2023.

Beyond the anniversary selection, the exhibitor line-up opens up a much broader tour of Hungarian wine, with producers representing regions including Tokaj, Villány, Badacsony, Eger, Balatonfüred–Csopak, Kunság and Pannonhalma.

There are new names to discover as well. Skrabski Winery from Balatonudvari makes its festival debut with wines from organically managed vineyards and wild yeast fermentation, while Eger winemaker Csaba Demeter returns with his new XY portfolio.

The Americas Take the Spotlight

In 2026, the festival’s international focus moves across the Atlantic, with three dedicated stands and four themed tasting selections exploring wines from North and South America.

The programme stretches from Napa Valley to Mendoza, showcasing some of the continent’s best-known wine regions and styles. Visitors can explore Argentinian Malbec, compare four different expressions of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, and discover traditional-method sparkling wines from California, represented by Schramsberg.

The special “Taste Your Way Across the Americas!” tasting experience offers a closer look at the guest-of-honour programme and is available as an add-on to a valid festival ticket. Tastings take place at the dedicated stands on Savoyai Terrace.

Meet the Winemakers — or Try Your Luck at the Wine Casino

Some of the festival’s wine experiences are designed to be informal and spontaneous. During the free Pop-up Wine Tastings, exhibitors personally introduce selected wines, giving visitors a chance to taste, ask questions and hear the stories behind the bottles directly from the people who produce them.

A more playful approach awaits at the revamped VinAgora Wine Casino by Taste & Play, where wine knowledge and blind tasting become part of four interactive games — with no actual gambling involved.

At Wine Roulette, visitors taste without seeing the label and try to identify the grape, region or style before placing their bet on a specially adapted roulette table. Gyropalette – Sparkling Wheel puts sparkling-wine knowledge to the test, challenging players to distinguish between styles such as Champagne, Cava and Prosecco.

Wine Blackjack explores different wine regions, including Szekszárd and Tokaj, while Wine Derby combines tasting questions with the mechanics of a horse race.

The Wine Casino is open to newcomers and experienced wine drinkers alike, and participation is free.

Exceptional Wine Is Best Enjoyed with Premium Food

Great wines often reveal their character best when paired with the right food, and the Budapest Wine Festival makes gastronomy part of the tasting experience. For 2026, the organisers are bringing together a varied food selection designed to accompany the wines poured throughout the four-day festival.

Visitors can expect freshly sliced premium cured hams, authentic Lebanese dishes, Italian classics, fresh oysters and premium street-food specialities.

Among the restaurants joining the festival for the first time in 2026 is Mozata, bringing Lebanese cuisine and the tradition of sharing mezze to Buda Castle. Its menu combines grilled meats and vegetables with fresh herbs, spices, citrus flavours and creamy dips, offering plenty of possibilities for pairing different flavours with wine.

The wider gastronomy programme also brings together familiar names from Budapest’s restaurant scene, including Gianni Annoni of Pomo d’Oro and representatives of St. Andrea Restaurant and Hello Buda. Together with Hungarian winemakers, they will take part in informal conversations accompanied by selected wines and specially prepared bites, bringing the relationship between what is in the glass and what is on the plate into the festival programme itself.

From Wine Tasting to an Evening at Buda Castle

As the tastings move into the evening, the festival shifts towards live music and entertainment. The MVM Stage hosts concerts every evening, with a programme spanning jazz, blues, pop, folk and country, followed by DJ sets. With the terraces of Buda Castle overlooking the Danube, the views across Budapest after dark become part of the experience too.

There is also a separate Culinaris Wine & Music VIP area. During the day, it offers a quieter terrace with selected wines, sparkling wines and spirits; later, DJs turn it into a dedicated evening party space.

The VIP experience is an add-on rather than an admission ticket and costs 15,000 HUF (approximately €41) in addition to a valid festival ticket. It includes access to the VIP area, gourmet tasting bites served hourly until 7 pm and evening DJ performances.

Budapest Wine Festival 2026 Tickets

A Daily Ticket costs 8,900 HUF (approximately €24), while the new Explorer Daily Ticket is available for 4,450 HUF (approximately €12). Designed for visitors who prefer a quieter afternoon at the festival, the Explorer ticket requires entry before 5 pm. Guests can remain inside until closing, although re-entry is not permitted after leaving.

Both options include a festival tasting glass and one complimentary wine tasting, with food and additional wines purchased separately.

A four-day pass is available for 16,900 HUF (approximately €46), alongside a range of additional tasting experiences, wine and food programmes, and VIP options that visitors can add to their day.

Euro equivalents are approximate and may vary depending on the exchange rate.

Make a Weekend of It in Budapest

Budapest Wine Festival can easily become part of a longer city break rather than the only reason for the trip. Its setting at Buda Castle already places visitors in one of the most distinctive parts of the city, overlooking the Danube and the Pest side of Budapest.

Beyond the festival, a few days leave time to explore both sides of the river, take a walk or cruise along the Danube, visit one of Budapest’s historic thermal baths and discover more of Hungarian cuisine in the city’s restaurants and markets.

With the festival running from Wednesday to Saturday, there is plenty of flexibility to combine an afternoon or evening of wine tasting at Buda Castle with a few days exploring Budapest.
